Just typed this up on my website (https://tanzi-media.com/Blogs/Misc_blogs/Solving_Problems)
Sort of my thoughts on a recent #vlogbrothers video, but also talked about how excited I've been to see how everyone has reacted to #cohost shutting down, and how in large part everyone is trying to create spaces on the internet that they actually want to be on. Something Cohost showed as was possible.

PSA for Akkoma instance ops: we just found out that the internal relay Works and Behaves as Expected with the allowlist. this’ll definitely help with federation and discovery
here’s how to set it up:
Allow Relay in the instance settings (or :instance, allow_relay: true in the config)https://instance.tld/relay, needs to be the “real” URL for split domain setups) in relays, you can refresh the list after a few seconds, if Followed back changes to a ✓, it’s workingit's getting cold, so I started running protein folding on my desktop again, and it's stupid how effective those things are at being space heaters, especially the one with a GPU
(space heater that also does some biomedical research :) )
I use folding@home for this https://foldingathome.org but there's also other distributed-computing-for-research projects out there using tools like BOINC https://boinc.berkeley.edu
today in “Good Music I happen to be listening to right now”: Shingo Nakamura - Small Image
i wanted to check if this thing is set up to allow uploading videos and it appears to be so now i’m just gonna share one of my favorite videos in recent memory, thanks
yknow, I wish akkoma(/akkoma-fe) had the “warn when sending an image without alt text” feature, I know that some other fedi frontends do have it and it does come in handy
if someone hasn't already, i think i'm going to coin the term technoableism for stories like this one:
https://futurism.com/neoscope/paralyzed-man-exoskeleton-too-old
"After 371,091 steps my exoskeleton is being retired after 10 years of unbelievable physical therapy," Michael Straight posted on Facebook earlier this month. "The reasons why it has stopped is a pathetic excuse for a bad company to try and make more money."
According to Straight, the issue was caused by a piece of wiring that had come loose from the battery that powered a wristwatch used to control the exoskeleton. This would cost peanuts for Lifeward to fix up, but it refused to service anything more than five years old, Straight said.
stories like this remind me of the big IEEE Spectrum article from about two years ago about people with bionic eyes having the company that created them explode, leaving them to either get the technology removed, hope for the best, or DIY any issues for as long as possible. it's all kind of a super fucked up industry
the strategy of "follow everyone then unfollow those i don't vibe with" is essentially how a slime mold develops. someone could study this
