Before cohost went silent, everyone was scrambling to get each other’s contact info and set up places on other social media where they could still connect with friends and for creators, display their work and act as advertisement. I joined bluesky because I saw that it was where a lot of friends were heading, at least in the short term to see how things shook out. But because I knew the website league was being worked on by smart and dependable people, it’s been my intention to, once the league goes public, the basic rules are solidified, and it has all the major features implemented and kinks ironed out, use my presence on bluesky to inform those who follow me of its existence and what it’s all about. I would link to the stories I’m posting here over on bluesky to give those interested in my writing a little exposure to the place too.
Bluesky seems to have gobbled up the lion’s share of folks from cohost and has had a major influx of people from twitter while it continues to rot expeditiously, as well as from places like the fediverse and tumblr. But bluesky is still just twitter with the timer ticking down on it. It’s already shit in a lot of ways and it’s only going to get shittier… especially since it feels like it’s gained the kind of user numbers that twitter had that kept everyone glued there from the social gravitational pull of “all my friends are there” while it became more and more unbearable. That platform cementation, the situation in which a social platform is felt to be so integral to keeping up with friends and running businesses, especially for those who are self employed like artists, AND people’s lack of time to maintain multiple presences online (I’ve been feeling this with my 3 socials and discord), ends up leaving people behind.
For those who loathe the ideas bluesky is built upon (“we don’t ban bigotry and hate speech, but we let you set how much of it you want to see in your feed so it’s okay!”, etc) and the vultures who are guiding it into being the next social media cash cow at everyone’s expense, the thought of using it, even in the supposed “short term” is untenable. And as its social gravity grows, and those who do use it among other sites find more and more of their friends on bluesky, the time they spend there grows, and the time they spend elsewhere shrinks. …and people with clear eyes and conviction end up excluded by that social pull. And folks here know how I feel about exclusion.
It’s a problem, and one that grows more difficult to overcome with the passage of time. So I may go ahead and start linking to my stories and stuff here over on bluesky as long as that’s not a problem. And I also may stop checking in over on bluesky every day and instead check in only every few days. I’m not cool with the direction things are going in the greater online space, I’m not cool with people being excluded and made to feel like garbage, and I’m not cool with tacitly assisting in all that even in the short term. Gravity sucks.
@RebaRabbit there’s a name for that “social gravity” phenomenon you’re describing in case you wanna search it up, it’s called the network effect, and it is definitely A Problem for alternative platforms
@adam Ahh okay, I can’t believe I’d never heard the term for this until now. Thanks!
@RebaRabbit On similar lines, it sucks how the network effect both leads to artists only uploading art to FurAffinity, and people only looking at art if it’s on FA or the Nazifur art theft site.
@FaeAlchemist Yeaaaah. Nazifur art theft site threw me for a second cuz I was trying to think of a place that artists regularly upload their own art to that fits that description, but then I realized it was the “e” one.
In some ways I feel that art sites suffer from the network effect both more and less than other examples. It’s easier to plop your art on multiple sites than trying to keep up with people on multiple sites cuz you can sort of “post it and ghost it”. But the server space needed for a solid art site requires a lot more from operators, which means there’s usually less alternate/better choices than could be available on majority text based sites.
I don’t like it UnU
@RebaRabbit As I understand it, it will soon be possible to build new instances on Bluesky’s protocols that could do more to protect their users. I like Bluesky more than some people, but the absolute dogshit moderation and lack of account locking has already been a problem for me.
Bluesky moderation might be terrible on issues like harassment but it’s definitely better at stemming Nazi propaganda. So there’s that at least.
@RebaRabbit I did specifically phrase the post to be ambiguous about who’s uploading art to the Nazifur art theft site, though you are right that a number of artists self upload. Honestly though, we probably follow fewer artists on Weasyl than Cohost, because there just… aren’t a lot (particularly when filtered by our specific interests/kinks) even with people just keeping PostyBirb active.
On a more pleasant note, this conversation reminded me to upload a couple of pieces Vivi did to our Weasyl.
@FaeAlchemist Ooh, I’ll have to go take a look ^u^
I may go ahead and start linking to my stories and stuff here over on bluesky as long as that’s not a problem.
the main problem I can think of is the League is not yet generally open to users, and I’ve yet to put up anything a visitor could see which explains that (or even that this server is part of a network).
which I now have multiple reasons to get on top of, so hopefully that’ll soon be reduced to just “people can’t currently join the conversation here but know where to look for when that’ll change.”
@wenchcoat Yeah, I hear ya. I’ll cool my jets for now. Thanks for responding, I already knew this but wasn’t thinking of it because, I will admit, I was looking through the smoke from me burning up over the situation. I’ll tackle things from different angles and also maybe distract myself some with that illustration idea. <3
@RebaRabbit oh I’m not saying don’t! just, that’s the circumstance to be aware of up front.
@RebaRabbit I wish there were a better site. Even though it's basically proven at this point that big social media corpos are reliant on investment funds to accumulate a large userbase and are difficult to profit off of ethically, majority of the people using the internet want this sort of platform. People ultimately just want an app to Post that can take an infinite amount of images and videos, and where they can scroll to see everything. People are just tired and tech is hard for a lot of folk. Bluesky definitely feels like twitter 2.0 and like cosplaying as fediverse (yeah, let's see there be an actual separate instance before I believe in their tech for this), complete with typical fediverse discourse like people publically shaming others for the publicly-available alt-text-for-images statistics. It's not ideal. But I don't think people that signed up for bluesky will be the type that signs up for website league, even when it goes public. As much as I don't like how much bluesky has risen to power, at least it made people aware they can and should be curating their spaces. One step forward two steps back, social media moment.
