windows 10 support end is on the horizon. i wonder if they'll keep doing security patches or just flat-out stop touching it entirely. if they go for the latter option, i might just consider setting up another linux distro for my main machine (i have mint on my thinkpad x280), as i really don't want to swept up into microsoft's newfound ai tech ecosystem.

might use arch btw

@critta win10 end of service will be the thing that eventually forces us onto linux. everyone says we have linux user vibes despite not actually being that

@softtummybitch i suppose we all have "linux user vibes" because we are willing to do things ourselves. we are computerusers and aren't (well, i'm not) scared to use a terminal to get something working. i've used windows basically my entire life and by life i mean the entirety i've used a computer. not a considerably long time but a long enough time to think microsoft are being wankers

@softtummybitch @critta yeah… literally the only conscious reason I’ve stayed on Windows so long, beyond simple inertia, is it’s a mandatory target for game dev and cross-compiling is often a bitch. Win10 EOL thoroughly tips the balance for me.

@wenchcoat @softtummybitch @critta Yup. Win10 EOL is why I’ve been slowly trying to figure out linux, and more importantly, if I can get my necessary windows programs to work with wine etc.

Worst case scenario I’ll be using linux for all internet things in the future with the ability to boot into WIN10, which I won’t be online while using, to work on things in those programs. I’m not gonna dance the Win11 tango, nope U_U

@RebaRabbit @wenchcoat @critta @softtummybitch that’s kinda what I do right now, except it’s vr (it’s currently… not very good on linux; I blame valve and steamvr)

other than vr, literally everything I need runs just fine on linux (either natively or through wine/proton), so yeah

@adam vr is definitely one of the Biggest issues that is keeping me from switching to linux on my main computer. unfortunately i've been "blessed" with a meta quest 2 that i enjoy using hooked up to my machine. i know steamvr works with certain distros in a "Yes, but..." way, however i'm unsure if that's just index-only (i haven't looked into it myself)

@critta also running a quest 2 over wifi (with a dedicated router), virtual desktop on windows is janky, but mostly Just Werks, while both ALVR and wivrn on linux are kinda meh, plus sometimes steamvr bindings just jank out with some games on linux
